FA FutureFit 2026/27: Youth Football Formats and Transitions

From 2026/27, the FA pathway keeps children in smaller formats for longer: U7 starts with 3v3, followed by two years each of 5v5, 7v7 and 9v9 before 11v11 begins at U14. Prepare players for the space, relationships and decisions that change between formats, not just a new formation on a tactics board.

The 2026/27 pathway at a glance

The FA says the new pathway begins in the 2026/27 season. U7 uses 3v3; U8 and U9 use 5v5; U10 and U11 use 7v7; U12 and U13 use 9v9; and 11v11 begins at U14. Smaller formats may still be useful in training at any age.

Treat this national pathway as the starting point. Confirm the format, laws, competition structure and local delivery that apply to your team with its league and County FA before making a matchday plan.

FA FutureFit age-group pathway from 2026/27
Age groupMaximum match formatMain transition to prepare for
U73v3Lots of involvement, no fixed positions and child-led restarts.
U8–U95v5A goalkeeper, a larger area and more relationships around the ball.
U10–U117v7More width, depth, combination play and rotation choices.
U12–U139v9Bigger spaces, more players and new positional relationships.
U14+11v11A full-size structure without losing the habits learned in smaller games.

Look beyond the formation

A format change affects much more than where magnets sit before kick-off. Players meet a larger space, different distances, extra teammates and opponents, and sometimes different restart or competition rules. The useful coaching question is: what will feel new to the players?

  • Space: can players recognise when to make the pitch bigger or smaller?
  • Relationships: can they see options on, around and away from the ball?
  • Roles: have players experienced more than one starting position?
  • Decisions: do practices allow players to solve realistic game problems?
  • Physical demand: are work periods and recovery appropriate for the group?
  • Confidence: do players understand what will change before their first fixture?

Prepare through training in small steps

  1. Keep familiar small-sided games so players retain frequent involvement.
  2. Occasionally make the area wider or longer to expose the next spatial problem.
  3. Add players gradually and ask what new passing, covering or movement options appear.
  4. Rotate starting roles instead of fixing children into one future position.
  5. Connect one training idea to the next match rather than teaching a whole system at once.
  6. Ask players what feels different and adapt the next practice from their answers.

Build a calm first matchday in the new format

Plan a recognisable starting shape, but keep the language simple. Show players where useful space might be, who can support them nearby and how planned changes will work. A formation is a starting reference, not a promise that the game will stay in neat lines.

Prepare the squad and periods before arrival, then record what actually happened. That makes the next teamsheet and training plan more useful than relying on the original diagram alone.
